The Merkel Municipal Court is located at 100 Kent Street, Merkel, TX. Normal business hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch. When making a personal appearance you must enter City Hall through the Water Department entrance. From there, you will be directed to the Court.

Please allow two (2) working days for Court personnel to process your citation.

Entering a Plea:

After receiving a citation, you must appear in Court and enter a plea by the twenty (20) day promise to appear date. You may appear in person, through certified mail or via attorney. You will need to enter a plea to each charge.

 The available pleas are:

  1. Nolo Contendere (No Contest);
  2. Guilty; or
  3. Not Guilty.

With a plea of No Contest or Guilty, you have the option of requesting a Driver’s Safety Course (DSC) or requesting Deferred Disposition. You MUST contact the Court. It is not guaranteed that the DSC or deferral request will be granted.

You are not eligible for the DSC option if:

  • Your offense occurred in a construction zone with workers present.
  • You were passing a school bus.
  • You were speeding 25 MPH or more above the posted speed limit.
  • Your speed was 95 MPH or more.
  • You hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

If you choose to make a plea of Not Guilty, you will be set for a pre-trial hearing and notice will be mailed to you via certified mail.
