Merkel City Council meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, unless otherwise stated, at 7:00pm at Heritage Hall, located at 111 Taylor Street. Please visit the City Government page to view the agenda and check for any changes to dates and/or location.

If you are interested in running for city council or mayor, you must, among other requirements:
- be a citizen of the United States
- be at least 18 years old on the date of the election
- be a registered voter and have lived in the State of Texas for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the filing date for the election,
- be a resident in your city for at least 12 months prior to the filing date for the election of Mayor, and be a resident in your city for at least 6 months prior to the filing date for the election of Alderman
The next scheduled election will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024.
