Merkel has grown from the open prairie where buffalo roamed until explorers mapped the territory, followed by buffalo hunters, soldiers and trail drivers. The railroad came to Abilene and soon moved west where town
sites were dropped off by the railroad approximately every 15 miles. Pioneer men and women arrived to wrestle with shinnery and scratch out a living by farming and ranching-all tied to the gasp for water.
Today the "Windmill City of West Texas" has approximately 2,500 people with approximately 500 living in the surrounding area. Located 16 miles west
of Abilene on Interstate 20 at the intersections of FM 126 and FM 1235, the city of Merkel supports:
